#To all the single and married individuals:

Marriage is not a human invention. No ethnicity, nation, or society can claim it began the concept. It was God who established it. He initiated and conducted the very first marriage on earth between Adam and Eve (see Genesis 2:18; Genesis 1:26-28).

Marriage is a creation of God, and no one understands it better than its Creator. As with any creation, marriage comes with guidelines for optimal use. So, does it have a manual? The answer is YES.

The Bible serves as the definitive guide on marriage from God. Entering a marriage without following its guidelines will not lead to a happy union. Understanding and applying biblical teachings about marriage is essential for success. This is the way to invite God into your home. Some believe that bringing God into a marriage means only praying or singing to Him, which is good, but incomplete. When you actively follow God’s instructions in scripture, you truly invite Him into your life, and you might find yourself praying less. Often, we mistakenly think that prayer can take the place of obedience. However, obedience is vital for a fulfilling relationship with God.

Next, let’s explore four fundamental reasons why God instituted marriage.

1. For companionship (friendship):

God recognized that man was alone, lacking a partner akin to himself. To remedy this, God created a woman and united them in marriage (Genesis 2:18-25). The initial reason for marriage is companionship. Marry for friendship and nurture that bond while you’re together, rather than viewing each other merely as husband and wife or servant and master.

2. For partnership:

A wife is meant to be a partner to her husband. God intends for both partners to collaborate in all aspects of life. They should work together spiritually, emotionally, and financially. They are to be allies, not adversaries. It’s contrary to the spirit of marriage for one partner to be unaware of the other’s financial situation. Both should work collectively toward progress (see Genesis 2:18).

3. For sexual enjoyment:

Marriage is the only environment where sexual relations should take place. God designed our sexual organs with the expectation that we will enjoy sexual intimacy. A satisfying sexual relationship involves both partners actively participating. Couples can only experience a fulfilling sex life by engaging in mutual pleasure. Strive to make your intimate moments memorable for both of you (Genesis 4:1-5).

4. For procreation:

The fourth reason God established marriage is for raising children (Genesis 4:1-5). Couples are expected to have children, but in many African cultures, this reason is often prioritized above the others. This is not ideal. It’s important to recognize that health issues or personal circumstances may delay or prevent childbearing. Therefore, patience, support, encouragement, medical help, and prayers are essential. A husband who leaves his wife, divorces her, or seeks another partner during difficulties related to childbirth is not living up to his role and shows a lack of love. That’s a sad situation!

In conclusion, marriage is truly a beautiful institution. When approached according to God’s teachings, it can lead to satisfaction and success. While numerous books and counselors may offer insights into marriage, God’s word is the ultimate authority. Thank you for reading, commenting, liking, and sharing.
