As summer approaches with warmer weather and longer days, there tends to be an uptick in social events and celebrations. While this season is often filled with family gatherings, festivals, beach trips, and barbecues, it can also lead to heightened substance use for many individuals during these occasions.

What Causes Increased Substance Use in Summer?

Several reasons contribute to the spike in alcohol and drug consumption during the summertime:

More Social Events

The warm weather leads to more gatherings where alcohol and other substances are often present. Being in these environments can create a sense of pressure to partake.

More Free Time

Vacations, school breaks, and flexible work schedules often leave people with additional leisure time. When healthy routines are lacking, some may resort to substance use to alleviate boredom.

Mental Health Struggles

For those dealing with anxiety, depression, or trauma, summer can be tough. The constant push to have fun can feel isolating, leading some to self-medicate with substances.

Who Is at Greater Risk?

While anyone can face challenges, some groups are at a higher risk:

  • Teens and young adults enjoying their summer break
  • Individuals who are in early recovery
  • People with co-existing mental health issues
  • Those who feel lonely or isolated during summer

Strategies to Support Recovery in Summer

  • Connect with support: Seek out therapists, support groups, or a recovery coach; these resources can be key for those in recovery.
  • Be proactive about events: Identifying potential triggers and preparing an exit plan can help in high-stress situations.
  • Prioritize self-care: Ensure you allocate time for relaxation, nutritious meals, and regular exercise to stay grounded.

Support Is Available

If substance use has become a problem for you or someone you care about during the summer, help is accessible. At Gateway Foundation, we offer empathetic, evidence-based care for substance use and mental health disorders. For more details, call 877-505-HOPE.
