Mental health services are a hot topic, appearing everywhere from news stories to workplace discussions. Although there has been progress in how society views mental health in recent years, stigma remains a barrier for many when it comes to seeking help. A study indicated a significant drop in negative views about depression from 1996 to 2006, yet biases concerning other disorders, like schizophrenia and alcohol use, still linger.

Facing these stigmas can be disheartening, but utilizing effective tactics can help you safeguard your mental health and shed feelings of shame. Below are several strategies aimed at overcoming mental health stigmas, enabling you to seek the support you need.

Understanding Stigma

To enhance access to mental health care, tackling stigma is crucial. Stigma refers to the “negative beliefs, attitudes, and stereotypes that society may hold against individuals with mental health issues,” which can manifest as negative perceptions or discriminatory actions regarding mental health overall.

You might believe you do not harbor negative attitudes toward mental health, but recognizing them can be challenging. Stigmas can appear in various ways, such as:

  • Structural stigma consists of laws, regulations, and policies that restrict access to mental health services and violate individuals’ health rights. For instance, prior to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), it was legal for an employer to dismiss someone simply for having a mental health issue.
  • Public stigma encompasses harmful attitudes that individuals or communities may hold about mental health challenges (including from families or healthcare providers). An example is if someone describes a person with bipolar disorder as “crazy” instead of recognizing their medical issue.
  • Self-stigma occurs within individuals who experience mental health conditions. You may feel ashamed or blame yourself for your struggles, which can harm your overall wellbeing. This could manifest as negative self-talk, such as thinking, “I deserve to feel this way, so seeking help isn’t worth it.”

So why does stigma matter? Its effects can be extensive and harmful. Negative perceptions can:

  • Deter individuals from seeking necessary help
  • Reduce empathy and support for those with mental health conditions
  • Restrict access to jobs, housing, insurance, and social activities
  • Foster discrimination and violence against those with mental health challenges
  • Affect individuals’ self-esteem and confidence

Who Is Most Affected?

Feelings of shame concerning mental health can impact anyone. However, some groups face greater challenges due to cultural, generational, and economic influences. For instance, men are often less likely to seek mental health support, leading to untreated needs that may escalate to depression or even suicide—a leading cause of death in men. Similarly, veterans frequently struggle to access mental health care.

Addressing the stigma surrounding mental health is essential for everyone, but acknowledging the demographics most affected can aid in accessing the necessary support for you and your loved ones.

Strategies to Combat Stigma

Overcoming the challenges posed by mental health stigma may seem daunting, but small actions can lead to substantial changes. Recognizing where stigmas arise is just the beginning. Here are some approaches to take:

Education Is Key

One of the most effective ways to challenge mental health stigma is through education. The World Health Organization emphasizes that “Stigma is often linked to mental health literacy. Correcting myths about mental health can lessen prejudice and reduce discrimination.” Expanding your knowledge enables you to assist others and challenge harmful beliefs about mental health in your community.

Open Conversations

Sharing your experiences around mental health makes it easier to move past feelings of embarrassment and supports others in doing the same. Honest discussions about mental health can help normalize the conversation and promote empowerment over shame.

Promote Compassion and Equality

Reducing stigma means fostering understanding. By advocating for fair and compassionate access to mental health care, you can diminish the shame that prevents individuals from seeking assistance.

Prioritize Yourself

Removing barriers to mental health access benefits everyone, including you! Taking care of your mental health is the ultimate form of self-love, and therapists can guide you on this journey.

Seeking Assistance Is Essential

Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness. In fact, recognizing that you can’t tackle everything on your own shows strength, as people thrive on mutual support. Seeking guidance from a therapist or counselor is an act of prioritizing your well-being and equipping yourself with the tools to improve your mental health. Remember:

  • Asking for help is not a weakness
  • You don’t need to navigate everything by yourself
  • You are not a victim; you are your own advocate

Addressing the challenges to mental health care paves the way for a more equitable and accepting future. Small actions can make a significant difference in breaking down stigmas. Find a qualified therapist through GoodTherapy, and remember that you are never alone; support is available.
