WHAT WAS THE SIGNIFICANT TURNING POINT IN YOUR RECOVERY FROM DEPRESSION?
For me, it involved a mix of therapy, particularly dealing with my past that I had been avoiding, and participating in a 12-step program for codependency. This helped me recognize my obsession with people, places, and things, and my lack of control over my compulsive thoughts. My depression often peaked after intense dramatic moments in my life, and I realized I needed to evaluate how I was continuously creating turmoil by holding onto specific outcomes.
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS THAT REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE?
- Learning to remain centered and present through meditation and prayer.
- Realizing that not everything is black and white and embracing the complexities of life.
- Having a supportive group and people to confide in, preventing my feelings from bottling up.
- Focusing on my own personal growth and letting others handle their own journeys.
- Taking the time to help and support others, which helps redirect my thoughts away from myself.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER MEN BATTLING DEPRESSION?
Begin with a small step forward, and remember, you don’t have to face this alone. You aren’t a bad person or doing something wrong; you are simply unwell and need to take some action—no matter how minor—to start your recovery journey.
You are not alone in this struggle; seek out others who have experienced similar challenges.
Transform your depression into action and service to others, and you may end up feeling grateful for the lessons learned through tough times, as you can utilize your experiences to assist those who are also suffering. Whenever you feel uncertain, do your best to find balance and clear your mind. Self-pity and excessive rumination are different from genuine sadness. If your situation feels overwhelmingly dark, it’s time to seriously engage with your support system.
Visit ppgrecoveredcodependents.org if you relate to my experiences, especially if you find yourself thinking in a way similar to how an alcoholic drinks! If you often spiral into resentment and fear, causing severe depressive episodes, you might be surprised at how much this free program, alongside effective therapy, can positively impact your life!
