As a parent, having solutions at hand can make it easier for you to support your child through challenges.
Dr. Robb Kelly has faced his own battles with alcohol and understands feelings of despair. Alcohol consumption can lead to serious repercussions, including family estrangement and homelessness. At one point, Dr. Kelly was homeless on the streets of Manchester, UK. Eventually, he recognized his inability to quit drinking, was ready to make a change, and began his recovery journey with assistance.
Today, he utilizes both his personal experiences and professional skills to guide others struggling with addiction and trauma.

Addiction can impact anyone, but I was curious about Dr. Kelly’s views on its prevalence among musicians, especially as many parents I’ve spoken to have musical children. Dr. Kelly, also a musician, has collaborated with notable artists and explains why those in the music field might be more susceptible to substance abuse. It seems musicians and artists tend to face more challenges than others.
We also discussed the balance between letting go and staying connected with family members in distress. Dr. Kelly indicated that when family is involved in the recovery of someone battling alcohol or drug addiction, chances of success improve. However, if there’s chaos or violence at home, it might be necessary for the addicted person to find a different living situation. Continuous communication about the problem can be beneficial, and it’s vital for them to have someone to engage with during their journey.
Dr. Kelly also touched on harm reduction, noting that everyone experiences childhood trauma. It’s important to understand the specific trauma affecting each individual, as such experiences impact people uniquely. He believes that trauma often serves as a precursor to substance use.
