This meditation focuses on creating a space for healing amidst political divides, racial conflicts, and social isolation.
This meditation for racial healing centers on our interconnectedness, recognizing our relationship with ourselves to foster connections with others. By acknowledging this connection, we can open doors to healing political divides, racial issues, and any disconnection we may face in life.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wisely stated, “I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be.” This illustrates the profound interdependence of our existence. Let’s take a moment to reflect on this; it’s a reminder of our deep reliance on one another.
“I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be.”

Many believe that fostering a more just and inclusive society is simply about showing kindness and treating everyone equally. Yet, as you embark on your own journey of racial healing and connection, you’ll understand that while kindness and awareness are vital, they aren’t sufficient. Inner work is crucial.
The path of racial healing opens your eyes to the need for personal transformation as a foundation for becoming a culturally inclusive and connected individual. Today, together, we begin taking the first steps towards embracing our interconnectedness.
A Guided Meditation for Interconnection
1. Begin by sitting comfortably, maintaining a sense of alertness while lengthening your spine if you’d like. Imagine your body as a sturdy mountain, present but relaxed. You may gaze downward or gently close your eyes.
2. Now, I invite you to signal to your body and mind that you are ready to explore deeper aspects of yourself with curiosity, non-judgment, and self-compassion. Start by taking three deep breaths, at your own pace. Then settle into a soothing breathing rhythm that feels good. Let’s enjoy a minute of silence, staying aware of our breath.
3. Visualize a world where love connects all beings, leading to no harm among them. Recognize that this vision begins with us: our commitment to connect with, appreciate, and honor each other. Picture what it would be like to inhabit such a world, beginning with our own connections. Let’s take a moment to ground ourselves in our breath while imagining this interconnected reality.
4. Now, envision someone who has a different racial background than you. While race is a constructed concept, it’s still one we need to heal from. Picture this person, whether you have a personal connection or not.
5. As you visualize this individual, silently or aloud, repeat the following phrases to yourself, inspired by meditator Melanie Cerdan. We will pause between phrases to allow your feelings to resonate within you. Let’s connect with this person: “I am open to connect with you. I appreciate your willingness to connect with me. May the love within me connect with the love within you. I am present and honor your presence. I am light and honor your light. I am a unique human being and acknowledge your uniqueness. I am grateful and recognize your gratitude.”
6. Express gratitude to this person for this exchange of connection. Take notice of your emotions in this moment—what are you feeling? How does connecting in this way affect your body? Just observe everything that arises without labeling feelings or thoughts as right or wrong—simply exist in an open awareness of your current state.
7. As we wrap up, let’s reflect on a powerful quote from Dr. Harriet Lerner: “Only through our connectedness to others can we truly understand and enhance the self. And only by working on the self can we begin to improve our connection with others.” Let’s wish for the happiness and connection of all beings, and as we send this sentiment out, let’s welcome it back to us.
8. Finally, gently bring your focus back to your body, back to your present surroundings. Let us embrace the idea of interconnectedness as we move forward, deeply aware of our connections to others and all living things. Thank you for joining me in this practice today.
